Bathos?

I had understood bathos as a sort of intentional exaggeration or contrast...such as oh...I don't know.....suggesting that you would perhaps want to ritualistically kill yourself to retain your honor over take out food.

But...some further research...ok it was Wikipedia, I admit it....says that bathos is usually referring to work which unintentionally shows this exaggeration or contrast, and therefore is... well.... rotten.

Am I just thinking of the wrong term? Help me out...
